During monitoring of the Quowaee 4 Zareh Dar high school in Herat Province, local monitors for Integrity Watch found that the implementing company used poor-quality and broken wood cover the roof of the school building. Initially, Integrity Watch Focal Point and local monitors referred the problems to the company, providing an opportunity for the company to resolve the issues itself, but the company ignored these complaints, claiming instead to have used the best quality of wood.
The Herat team remained vigilant and pursued the issue, taking photos of the poor-quality and broken wood that were then shared with Eshaq Solaiman Community Development Council members. When later visiting the project site, CDC and Integrity Watch members shared the problem with the Provincial Monitoring Board (PMB).
PMB members responded by visited the site and compelled the company to change the poor-quality wood with a higher-quality version. The company has promised to bring these changes accordingly.
The Integrity Watch Community Based Monitoring Program (CBM-I) aims to empower citizens through authority positions that hold entities accountable, as well as by creating active and responsible citizenship by closing the gap between the state, aid actors, and civil society.
